Workshops

Are you involved in the field of science or the environment?

Are you a scientist, technologist, research manager, technical manager, NRM Manager, academic, communicator or PhD student wanting to increase your skills and communication confidence?

Learn how to handle media interviews, deal with potential public controversy, or give attention-grabbing presentations with our leading course presenters, including Econnect’s Jenni Metcalfe and Michelle Riedlinger and other colleagues such as Toss Gascoigne, Niall Byrne, Cathy Sage, Sarah Brooker and Don Alcock.

We keep our workshops small to allow for individual attention, plenty of practice, and maximum feedback.

Our workshops include:

  • comprehensive notes (and individual video/audio tapes to take away, where applicable)

  • working journalists brought in so you can practice being in the ‘hot seat’ (where applicable)

  • individual feedback on techniques and skills

  • evaluation reports to clients after the workshop

Workshops run over either one or two days. Two-day workshops allow more time to develop and practice your skills.

We can also combine or restructure our workshops to meet the needs of your group. For example, elements of the Media skills and Presentation skills workshops can be combined into a Communication skills workshop.

All our workshop presenters work in close daily contact with scientists and journalists.

We have been running communication skills workshops across Australia for more than twelve years, with consistently positive feedback.

Workshop participants come from Cooperative Research Centres, R&D corporations, CSIRO, NGOs, universities, industry and government departments.

Here are some comments about our workshops from managers, group leaders and participants:

“I highly recommend both the presentation and media skills courses run by Econnect. Both courses provide participants with the techniques and practice to confidently present their ideas, whether it be to scientific peers, the general public or the media.”

Simon Nicol, Researcher
Victorian Department of
Sustainability and Environment

“Communicating science does not come easily to everyone and these courses equip people with real skills that they can and will continue to draw on as their scientific careers develop.

The media course provides an excellent insight into the logistics of an interview and the practical sessions are extremely useful towards allaying many common fears and misconceptions associated with the press.

Similarly, the presentation course provides people with some practical skills for refining the message of their R&D and enhancing the delivery so that it suits their audience. Certainly value for money on all fronts.”
