Managing for biodiversity in the rangelands - Australian Government Department of the Environment and Water Resources, 2005–07 We edited and published the Australian Government Department of the Environment and Water Resources series, Managing for biodiversity in the rangelands. The series of eight books is targeted at extension officers, natural resource managers, land managers and industry representatives. Topics include managing total grazing pressure, managing fire, industry guidelines, assessing financial and environmental impacts of management options, managing weeds, managing feral animals, managing water, and monitoring biodiversity. We condensed each of the original 200–400 page scientific reports into 40-page booklets, liaising with authors, designers and sample audiences. We coordinated all aspects of editing, image selection, design and production. The outcome: A series of eight 40-page published booklets that meet the needs of extension officers, natural resource managers, land managers and industry representatives.

Landcare in the Philippines - ACIAR, 2004 We edited and produced the ACIAR book Landcare in the Philippines - People and Places. The book contains stories of people involved in landcare (farmers, local government officers, researchers, priests, local business people etc) and text boxes that summarise the key technical information. We also trained the landcare facilitators in interview techniques and photography, and we edited the interview transcripts. We're proud to say that this book, published in late 2004, is already changing government policy and actions in the Philippines and accelerating the spread of landcare. We write fact sheets for a variety of scientific and environmental organisations. Some are related to media events; others are produced as tools to help raise the profile of an organisation and its activities within the community. Managing Climate Variability Program, 2006 We produced a one-page two-sided fact sheet for each of the 27 research projects funded by the Program. Fact sheets were provided to delegates to the Program's forum, Climate Connect 2006. We also produced an A4 folder to present the fact sheets and promotional brochure.

Journalist on-board scientific expedition to Hinchinbrook Island, 2000 In December 2000, Jenni took her writing skills on a Rainforest Cooperative Research Centre expedition to the mountaintops of Hinchinbrook Island. Over three weeks, 12 biologists conducted the first ever survey of the flora and fauna of this steep, remote area. Jenni helped biologists set small animal traps and check them each morning, and participated in reptile and frog surveys. Using a satellite phone, she set up regular interviews between biologists and ABC radio (Townsville). An ABC TV journalist and cameraman joined the group via helicopter to produce a national news story. After the expedition, Jenni produced a number of media releases and articles for local media. National publication included a photographic article in GEO and a story on Channel 9 News. Outcome: High local profile and national coverage during the expedition, follow-up coverage, and an increased profile for the Rainforest CRC.

Dairy Australia's Dairying for Tomorrow program - Catchment research, 2006 We examined the farm and catchment research done under the Dairying for Tomorrow program. The program investigates the environmental interactions between farms and catchments across Australia. We identified the desired audience and the most appropriate media outlets through which to reach that audience. We consulted with researchers, farmers, natural resource managers and community catchment groups to develop feature articles and coordinate photographs to illustrate the issues, the people involved and the research outcomes on farms. Outcome: Five feature articles that illustrate the issues, the people involved and the research outcomes on farms.

CliMAG - Managing Climate Variability, 2006–07 We produce CliMAG, the biannual newsletter of the Managing Climate Variability program. We source and write the stories, source images, and manage the entire publication process, including design and printing.
Philippines landcare - AusAID/ACIAR, since 2004 We produce and distribute newsMATE, a monthly e-newsletter for an AusAID- and ACIAR-funded landcare project in the Philippines. We collect stories, news and images from the local landcare facilitators. We edit the stories lightly, lay out the newsletter and distribute it to subscribers. We also maintain the subscriber list. The outcome: Regular, timely and cost-effective e-newsletters with engaging content.
