Welcome to Econnect Communication’s September 2006 newsletter –  ‘Reducing our carbon emissions’.

This month we took time out to ponder what we could do at Econnect to reduce our collective carbon dioxide emissions. We have made a start and, while there’s plenty of room for improvement, we’d like to share with you some of our actions below.

We’d love to hear about actions you have taken in your workplace to help combat global warming.

Regards,

Reducing our carbon emissions at Econnect

By the Econnect team

  1. We have replaced all of our light bulbs with compact fluorescent (CFL) bulbs. We are also fortunate enough to be able to use natural lighting for most of the day.
  2. Our building is insulated and has natural ventilation, so we only use air-conditioning on very hot days.
  3. We have cleaned our air-conditioner filters in preparation for summer.
  4. We have a low-flow shower head in the office shower.
  5. We turn off our computers, computer screens and mobile phone chargers when they are not being used.
  6. We run the office dishwasher once a day for the twelve people who share the office building (this includes the architects downstairs).
  7. We recycle our office waste, including printer paper and lunch scraps.
  8. Mary takes our cardboard boxes and uses them as weed mats around her fruit trees.
  9. We use recycled paper for the printer and we encourage our clients to have their publications printed on recycled paper using a waterless press.
  10. We have a native bush garden on the work premises.
  11. We choose green power from our electricity provider.
  12. We support local businesses that support local producers, such as Sol Breads and The Forest.
  13. Jen and Michelle ride bikes to work; Mary and Sarah walk from Hill End; and Lynne, Tara and Melanie take the bus to work as much as possible.
  14. The Econnect car is regularly maintained and we keep the tyres inflated to get the most out of the fuel.
  15. When we have to fly, we make sure we visit as many clients as possible; the rest of the time, we use teleconferences and email.
  16. We support Landcare projects in the Philippines to help efforts internationally.
