Welcome to Econnect Communication’s December 2005 newsletter –
‘Season’s
Greetings’.
First up, we wish you a safe and pleasant holiday season and we
thank you for your continued interest.
This month, we welcomed Mary to Econnect as a full-time member
of the team.
Jenni was elected President of the Australian Science
Communicators in early December and is thinking about the
challenges for the role, especially in the lead up to the World
Science Journalism Conference 2007 in Melbourne.
Expect to hear from us again in late January. We’re looking
forward to 2006.
Regards,
Econnect Communication

Our Christmas gift
By

Many of
our colleagues, clients and friends have taken advantage
of innovative gifts such as Oxfam Unwrapped (see
Surf Club below). We decided to do something we have
wanted to do for a long time—provide the funds for a
horse, saddle and feed for Lorena Loma, a young Landcare
assistant facilitator working in remote parts of
southern Mindanao in the Philippines.
Lorena
works in Ned and often walks hours each day to visit
farmers and farmer facilitators. Even a motor bike
can’t handle this terrain. She often sets out at
5am, walks for six hours, has a short meeting and
lunch, and then faces the return journey—another six
hours! Most of us would not even contemplate the
idea.
I met
Lorena earlier this year at a Landcare facilitators’
workshop in the Philippines and was impressed with
her enthusiasm and dedication. She is a delightful
young woman, and the horse will mean she can do even
more with her days.
“This will really help Lorena,” says Noel Vock,
Project Leader of the AusAid/ACIAR Landcare Project
in the Philippines. “The farmers of the Ned region
really enjoy her visits and will be delighted to see
her more often.”
We’re hoping we’ll be able to visit Lorena one day,
and perhaps even go for a ride!

Dear Auntie
Marjorie, thanks for the buffalo…
A buffalo for Christmas? Bull! A goat in your stocking? You’re
kidding! Well, no. Take a peek at Oxfam Unwrapped
www.oxfamunwrapped.com.au
It’s a fantastic idea—your friend/family/colleague gets a card
telling them what you’ve bought, and your gift goes straight to
those in need.
Give a chicken for only $10. Or go the whole hog and buy a
buffalo for less than $500.
And it’s not just about animals. There are bars of soap, dunnies
(true!), seeds and bicycles. You can choose a well for a school,
or even deck out the whole school!
No excuses—it’s all online, it’s tax deductible, it’s
worthwhile, and it’s fun!
