Amanda Hodgson [Role: Science writer Lead person for: Climate Champion program Works 3 days/week, Monday - Wednesday] For the last 10 years, my life has been all about dugongs. I’ve spied on them using a balloon-mounted video camera, spent a lot of time counting them from small planes, and even tried using remote control planes to survey these animals. Yes, I know they’re under the ocean, but the best view of them is from high above.
While I love researching animals and gathering the information we need to protect them, I also feel passionate about getting this sort of information out to the people who have the power to protect them – the general public. For me, working at Econnect is a great way to learn about other people’s research and broaden my horizons past the world of dugongs. It’s also an opportunity to tell people about all the great research that’s being done, and, I hope, pass on my enthusiasm for using this knowledge to protect our environment. A favourite part of my week is the couple of hours I spend with my Somalian tutor family. Through Volunteer Refugee Tutoring and Community Support, a couple of other friends and I give them a hand with their homework and English skills. It’s always fun taking ourselves back to our school years… how do you do long-division again? I
absolutely love dancing (although don’t do enough of it these days) and
love watching great dancers. If I could choose a profession in another
life, that would be it (I’d also choose to have better balance). PhD (Dugong behaviour and response to human influences) Bachelor of Science with Honours (Environmental Management) Australian Science Communicators CV Read Amanda's CV. Email amanda@econnect.com.au Phone 07 3846 7111
