I love writing to a ridiculously short word limit and editing to a ludicrously tight deadline. So I’m in the right job, finally.

What I love about working with scientists is how they love to explain their work and how they are always happy to review my writing about their work – it’s comforting to know that the facts will always be correct.

My favourite assignment is to summarise a science paper in plain English. Yes, really. It can be a fun puzzle, like trying to crack the code. I also seem to have a knack for writing headlines and coming up with names for things.

As a professional editor, I get to indulge my love of words and my love of pruning—rewriting, condensing, synthesising, repurposing, restructuring, ‘chop it right back’, ‘run your eye over it’, ‘a quick polish’, ‘by 5 o’clock’…

Sometimes a light prune with the secateurs is all that is required. Other times call for the machete.

When I’m not staring at a computer, I’m usually staring at birds, weeds or rising dam levels; marvelling at nature’s persistence (mowing); or contemplating my Washington navels. I escaped from the city and now I work from my rural retreat in the Sunshine Coast hinterland.

If you’re up early enough you might spot me gliding across a nearby lake in my single scull, in relentless pursuit of perfection.
